First and most importantly, we want to express our sincere respect for your family’s service and sacrifice. We recognize the deep personal meaning that veteran‑support programs carry, and we are honored to have you as part of the WSU community.

Unfortunately, due to financial challenges, the university has had to make some difficult decisions regarding several aid programs. After careful evaluation, the Gold Star Book Stipend program has been revised. Beginning in Summer 2026, current recipients will no longer receive the $250‑per‑semester stipend.

Under the new structure, starting Fall 2026, the program will continue in a more limited form. It will be offered only to newly admitted eligible students, and only during their first academic year (fall and spring semesters). Summer Session will no longer be included. We have a dedicated fund allocation for the Gold Star Book Stipend.  If we meet or exceed that allocation, newly admitted students may not receive the stipend.  These changes help ensure the program can continue while meeting budget requirements. This adjustment does not affect the Spouses and Dependents tuition waiver, which remains unchanged.

We understand that this news may be disappointing, and we are truly sorry for the impact it may have on you. Our commitment to supporting military-affiliated students remains strong, and we are here to help you navigate any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you for your resilience, for all you contribute to our campus community, and for the sacrifices your family has made in service to our country.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your primary campus VMASS Office.
